This Is Why You Should Never Install a Garage Door Yourself

posted on February 28, 2022

Do you have a new garage door that needs to be installed?

In our neck of the woods here in Heathsville and Tappahannock, VA, we love being independent and doing everything ourselves. However, when the project involves electrical wiring and structural components, that DIY spirit may not be enough to get you through to the finish line safely. And that’s why installing a garage door is best left to a professional technician.

In fact, at Easy Open Garage Doors, we’ve seen our fair share of disasters after novice homeowners (and even inexperienced handymen) attempted their own garage door installations. So, with that being said, here are some of the things that could go wrong during a rookie installation, and why you should hire a pro like us, instead.

Safety Hazards

First things first: Installing a garage door yourself is a major safety risk. Given how heavy and bulky garage doors are, the potential for physical injury is very high. This is especially true if you don’t correctly install the springs, which are a notoriously complicated part of the garage door system.

Faulty Wiring

Garage door systems often involve intricate wiring. Installing a garage door will require you to add a new electrical outlet and hook up the light system. If your garage hasn’t been plotted properly beforehand, your wiring job will become even more complicated, expensive, and potentially dangerous.

Poorly Operating Doors

If you don’t mount the lift motor precisely along the centerline, your garage doors won’t operate correctly. They’ll twist and bend because the panels are moving. Not only will this create lots of loud squealing and screeching noises whenever the doors open and close, but it will also damage your entire garage door system over time.

So, if you were on the fence about hiring a licensed garage door company to install your new doors, we hope this convinces you. Given the risk of personal injury, property damage, and mounting expenses, it’s worth it to rely on the expertise of a contractor you trust.
